About the Printer

Yellow and Green Prusa's

The prusa i3 MK3S 3-D pinter is a printer created by Josef Prusa and it is an example of additive manufacturing. Although compatible with other materials such as ABS the only material this 3-D printer uses is PLA or Polylactic acid. PLA has a melting temperature of around 180 degrees Celsius, it is also an organic compound that is safe to use to in open areas because it does not off gas any harmful substances.

Using the Printer (CAD & CAM)

To be able to print something the first step is to design it in a CAD (computer aided design) program, the CAD program that is often used in the space is fusion 360, which is free for 3 year for all AU students. However, there is other options such as tinkerCAD and blender. To learn more about fusion 360 you can come to a workshop specifically dedicated to teaching you fusion, the schedule for workshops is here , if you would like more information about fusion 360 without attending a workshop click the link here. After completing you design in a CAD program you will have to convert it to a set of directions in which the printer can follow, this is done using a CAM, computer aided manufacturing, program. The CAM software that is used in the lab is Cura which can be downloaded here. If you would like to learn how to use Cura please attend the workshop "Introduction to 3D printing with the Prusa I3 MK3S 3D Printer".
