(Generally, this workshop is offered at least once a day on a rotating basis. Check the Lab calendar for up-to-date availability!)

Welcome to the Design and Build Lab! To become a member of the community, you must attend an in-person Welcome to the Lab session, and complete a Safety Waiver.

Safety

While there are relatively few ways to seriously injure yourself in the lab, it is critical to know how to avoid the most common injuries, and what to do in case of one.

Safety Waiver

You will need to understand, complete, and submit the Safety Waiver before you allowed to work in the space.

Equipment

Any piece of equipment has the ability of creating an injury, but those with the most potential are those which have:

  • sharp edges (handheld cutting tools like blades and saws, CNC mill)
  • hot parts (glue gun, 3D printers)

Know where you are!

You may be the most careful person in the world, but if someone else in the lab isn't adhering to these precautions, you could still end up getting hurt! Be aware of your surroundings: if you're working in close quarters, try to find a more clear space; if you see someone using equipment in a dangerous manner, let a Specialist know. Additionally, to protect the equipment, there is absolutely no food or drink in DaBL.

Emergency procedures

Your instructor will give you a rundown of procedures in case of emergency.

Culture

Respect the community

Be kind to each other. We are creating a community of designers, builders, and experimenters; building a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere is paramount to the success of the space.

Respect the space

To protect the equipment, there is no food or open liquids in the Lab. And wherever you end up working during your time in DaBL, make sure you leave it cleaner than how you found it.

Tour

While DaBL doesn't have an enormous physical footprint, the number of different stations and variety of tools is quite large, and the possibilities for objects to build is enormous!

Generally, upon completion of this workshop (and the Safety Waiver), you are approved to use any hand tools and any other tools which do not require a computer station to operate (such as the soldering irons). For a list of machines you must be certified, see the Workshop Certification List.

Activity

You instructor may guide you through a small hands-on activity!
